God Told the Storm

Sunday after church we noticed tree limbs in the street as we drove our rocking car jolted by the winds that were remnants of hurricane Ike. Looking at the sky there was not a sign of impending danger or destruction. The sky looked calm serene and as beautiful as ever. Within the hour as tree limbs continued to fall in greater numbers, tree’s swayed and roofing and siding blew off homes it was evident this storm was beyond the norm. Power lines were snapped leaving nearly all of the city inhabitants powerless.

Here six days after what has been termed a “black out” there are just over 130,000 customers still without power. This is down from over 700,000 customers without power on Sunday evening. I am one of the blessed folks who happened to get my power back up with in hours of the storm while other blessed folks have just gotten theirs up in the last 24 to 48 hours. Of course this situation, as many of life’s situations do, has provided spiritual lessons and food for thought.

Sunday as our children played in the basement my husband and I reflected on the power of the wind. As we watched from the picture window in our family room a large oak tree swayed from the sheer strength of the wind, it put in perspective how powerful nature is and how little control we have over it. Yes we humans do a lot to impact our environment but we can’t control the winds, the rain, and the earth from shaking or the lightning from dashing. As the wind storm rolled through all that we could do was be still. Wait it out. Knowing that when it runs its course I could go grocery shopping and my husband could get his satellite signal for his football game once again. But as in the case of this storm just like the storms in your life chaos and destruction were left in its path. You might have to clean up, repair and wait a little longer but eventually life gets back to a normal pace. By God’s Grace you’re still standing and the storm didn’t destroy you.

Like many people from this area I also have an immense feeling of gratitude that I have shelter, I have food, I have power and water. Continue to pray for the people of TX who are struggling in the wake of this same storm system. Also continue to pray for my Ohio Family!

But those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint. Isaiah 40:31 NKJV
